Gabby Shanahan, a candidate for the Illinois State House District 97, recently participated in an event aimed at honoring children who are healing from child abuse. This information was shared by Shanahan following a public event held by Kendall County Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA).

"When people ask we why I'm running for office- my response is that everything I do is rooted in my children," said Shanahan, according to Facebook. "Our kids are part of the most vulnerable population and the most important part of the future. Today I attended CASA of Kendall County's ‘Hands Around The Courthouse' for Child Abuse Prevention Month. Remembering the kids who didn't make it because those who they trusted failed them and advocating for those who need love, support, and guidance from a trusted adult to succeed."

The 'Hands around the Courthouse' event took place on April 5 at the Kendall County Courthouse in Yorkville, IL. According to the Facebook event listing from CASA Kendal County, this gathering served as a silent tribute to over 100 youths in Kendall County who are "finding strength and healing" with the support of CASA after experiencing abuse and neglect.

As stated on its website, CASA is a nonprofit membership organization that "advocates for the best interest of children who have experienced abuse and neglect". The organization offers a comprehensive 35-hour training program for volunteers. These volunteers learn to represent and support children within the court system. They review records, attend scheduled court dates, and communicate with individuals involved in the children's lives, including foster families and case workers. Informed reports written by CASA volunteers assist judges in making decisions regarding children's placement and other needs during court appearances. While an 18-month commitment is requested from volunteers, they also have the option to stay until a case is resolved.

Shanahan is an Illinois native residing with her family in Kendall County. She was raised in Plainfield, graduated from Plainfield Central High School, and attended the University of St. Francis where she earned a double major in U.S. History and Political Science. Subsequently, Shanahan acquired a Master of Business Administration degree. Currently serving as the county chair of the Kendall Young Republicans and national committeewoman of Illinois for the Young Republican Nation Federation, she works for a nonprofit that "fights for taxpayers who deserve a voice in their government," according to her biography on her campaign website. Her political platform includes lower taxes, restoring accountability, protecting the communities of the district, and an "all of the above" approach to education, encompassing options to choose private schools and vocational programs.
