State Representative Jed Davis of Yorkville has introduced a bill aimed at addressing the firefighter shortage in Illinois. House Bill 1098, which has been assigned to the Police and Fire Committee, proposes lowering the minimum age for full-time firefighters from 21 to between 18 and 20 years old.

Davis described the bill as beneficial for both aspiring firefighters and fire departments in need of personnel. “House Bill 1098 is a win-win for both future firefighters and fire departments struggling to fill positions. This simple change opens doors for young adults ready to serve, while also helping ensure our communities stay protected,” he stated.

The representative highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that many fire departments are experiencing staffing shortages that pose risks to communities and first responders. “Fire departments statewide are facing critical staffing shortages, putting both communities and first responders at risk. We should be making it easier—not harder—for those eager to step up and serve,” Davis said.

This legislation is part of Davis’ Promoting Careers Bill Package, which seeks to expand career opportunities and bolster Illinois’ workforce.
