During a recent Montgomery Village Board of Trustees meeting, Montgomery Place resident Nikole Torres-Turnage told members the complex is giving the village a black eye, one she said “will only get worse if this kind of crime without intervention continues.”
Torres-Turnage, who said she is a lifelong resident of the village, told the Village Board of Trustees during their Sept. 26 meeting streamed on YouTube that residents need help holding the owners accountable. She cited several issues, including a string of crimes impacting residents.
“Management has informed me that they are working on security and the possibility of getting cameras,” she told board members at the meeting. “But this comes only after the loss of life and amount of negative publicity that the complex is now gaining. The saying goes, ‘It takes a village,’ and at this point it truly does.”
Torres-Turnage also told board members that she would like the Village to play an active role in holding the property management company of Montgomery Place accountable for residents, safety, code enforcement and repercussions should there be violations.
Kendall County Now reported that a week before the meeting there was a homicide at the complex. Joshua Correa, 42, was shot and killed in his apartment last month and his death remains under investigation.
Torres-Turnage expressed her dismay with the Village for allowing the management to continue without answering to anyone.
At the end of the meeting, Trustee Tom Besinger asked Police Chief Phil Smith and other staff members to provide information and assess the types of calls being made from Montgomery Place and to address the issues. The Kendall County Now report noted that the requested information was provided.
