On May 31st, Illinois passed its largest budget in state history before the conclusion of the Spring session. Representative Jed Davis expressed concerns over what he described as a chaotic legislative process, citing several bills pushed through at the last minute. He criticized House Democrats for their tactics, including using shell bills and suspending rules to advance their agenda.
In his response to the Fiscal Year 2026 (FY26) budget, Davis stated that Illinois residents should be “appalled” by both the content and passage method of the $55 billion budget. He argued that it was approved with little review time and without Republican input. Davis questioned the equity and inclusivity of this approach, suggesting it excluded millions from having their needs represented.
Davis also highlighted that the budget includes a pay raise for legislators during a time when many families struggle financially. He called this decision “abhorrent” and criticized what he perceives as greed within the Illinois General Assembly.
Despite his criticisms, Davis introduced an alternative budget proposal earlier in May. His plan suggests capping spending at $44 billion—a 20% reduction from Governor Pritzker’s proposal—and offering a $1,500 return to households earning less than $100,000 annually while reducing wasteful spending without affecting essential services.
Additionally, Davis announced various community events such as a fishing derby on June 14th at Silver Spring State Park – Loon Lake, where children can receive free fishing equipment. A property tax roundtable is also scheduled in collaboration with Americans for Prosperity to discuss solutions for rising property taxes.
The summer reading program encourages Kindergarteners through 5th graders to read eight books over summer vacation for rewards like certificates and ice cream vouchers. Submissions are due by August 15th.
