Village of Oswego issued the following announcement on Jan. 28.
Potentially life-threatening cold is expected to hit Oswego beginning early this week. Residents are advised that several events and services have been canceled or postponed and are urged to take precautions against dangerously cold temperatures to preserve their safety and their homes.
GARBAGE COLLECTION POSTPONED STARTING WEDNESDAY
Groot Industries, the Village’s contracted waste hauler, will not collect garbage and recycling on Wednesday, Jan. 30. Collection will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week.
As of the time of this release, Groot anticipates a 7 a.m. late start to collection on Thursday morning, however, Groot staff are carefully monitoring forecasts and will also postpone Thursday collection if temperatures remain too low for crews to work safely.
HOMEOWNERS CONFEDERATION CANCELED
Tonight’s meeting of the Homeowner’s Confederation has been canceled. A notice will be posted and sent to the media when the next meeting is scheduled.
HUDSON CROSSING PROJECT KICK-OFF POSTPONED
The project kick-off for The Reserve at Hudson Crossing originally scheduled for Wednesday afternoon has been postponed. A notice will be posted and sent to the media when a new date and time are confirmed.
DRIVERS, TAKE EXTREME CAUTION
Crews are clearing and salting roadways this afternoon, however, road salt becomes less effective as temperatures drop below zero. Roadways may remain frozen. Drivers are urged to stay off the roads when possible and to slow down in icy conditions.
AVOID FROZEN PIPES
Frozen pipes can burst, flooding your home. To keep your pipes from freezing, allow water to slowly drip from a faucet, preferably one serviced by pipes near an exterior wall of your home.
If your pipes do freeze, do not use a torch or other open flame to thaw them. Use a hair blow dryer to thaw your pipes. If that does not work, contact a licensed plumber.
If your pipes burst, shut off the water to your home at the main shut-off valve immediately and contact a licensed plumber.
KEEP YOUR HOME SAFE
House fires and carbon monoxide poisoning are more common in extreme cold as people attempt to stay warm.
Do not use ovens or gas-powered appliances to warm your home.
Keep your furnace vent clear of ice and snow. High-efficiency furnaces typically have an exhaust on the outside of the first level of homes. Ensure that no snow or ice are preventing your furnace from exhausting.
Clear the area around your gas meter to keep the gas pressure regulator in working order.
EXTREME COLD CAN BE DEADLY
Forecasted wind chills below -50 degrees have been predicted beginning Tuesday and continuing through this week. Wind chills this cold can cause frostbite in less than 10 minutes. Keep children, pets and other animals indoors.
If you must go outside, wear layers and be aware of the signs of hypothermia, including shivering, shallow breath, slurred speech and more.
