I CALL TO ORDER
President Campbell called the regular meeting to order at 6:02 p.m. Present for roll call were Campbell, Jernigan, Klatt, Martinez, W aldrop and W ard. Member V elazquez arrived at 6:24 p.m. Others present were administrators Seput, Adelmann, Alvarez, Thurwanger, Lee and Superintendent Baker and Board Secretary Benoit. Office staff present: Appel and Seeman.

Jernigan moved, and Martinez seconded the motion, to approve the agenda printed, with a revised personnel report.
Voting aye: Jernigan, Martinez, Campbell, Klatt, Waldrop and Ward.

IV RECOGNITIONS & CELEBRATIONS
At the May Board of Education meeting, three members of the Plano School District Music Team were present to be recognized because the district recently received the 2019 Best Communities for Music Education Award. Those present were Susan Webb, Plano High School; Jen Scarborough from the Middle School; and Ann Arends from PH Miller School. Also recognized but unable to attend were Liz Schroeder and Jean Reese, music teachers at Centennial School and Kevin McCammon and Brianne Borgman, band and vocal music teachers at Emily G. Johns School. The award was given by NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) and was only awarded to 623 school districts in the nation. Designations are made to school districts that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education.
Superintendent Baker told board members that there's not a team that works better together. He said they all have unique challenges based on the level of the kids, but they are the first ones to come together when they need something from the other buildings or to share instruments.
Superintendent Baker said the work that goes on behind the scenes is second to none. This group was recently awarded a Plano Premier Award and then recognized with an award of merit at the State level at the Illinois State Board of Education "Those Who Excel Program."
Superintendent Baker said the music teachers make sure they support one another. There's not an event you go to that you don't see a teacher or band teacher from one of the other buildings supporting it whether they had a role in the event or not. They are there to support one another.
Plano High School senior Synthia Gonzalez then presented Ms. Susan Webb with the Tri- M Music Honor Society Award of Excellence for the 2018-19 school year. Tri-M is a program of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) and Plano High School is one of 6200 participating chapters in several countries. It is designed to recognize students for their academic and musical achievements and to honor and provide leadership and service opportunities to young musicians. The high school students originally presented the award to Ms. Webb during their final spring concert.
Miss Gonzalez said the award is given to those who show integrity, selflessness and excellence in teaching and Miss Webb shows these qualities and traits every day. She said she's an awesome teacher who has changed my life and other people's lives.
Payton Cullison, Synthia Gonzalez and School Counselor Courtney Voise were present to discuss the high school’s St. Baldrick’s event. They said they were able to raise $819.37 for children’s cancer research through various events at the building and district-wide.

Maya Chavez was the only visitor. Lyle Rolfe (Record) was also present. No one wished to address the Board.

Focus Group Update: Partnerships
Mrs. Abby Alvarez and Mrs. Amy Lee, members of the Partnerships Focus Group, discussed activities of the groups from the past school year. The group was proud to announce that the “One Minute Wins” have been very popular with staff. The group is discussing ways to share the one minute videos with the community. The group has been meeting with Apptegy, a branding/marketing company, in order to provide timely messages and website updates to the staff, students and community. Mrs. Lee was proud to announce that the district has identified over 195 partnerships throughout Plano and neighboring communities. Transition students have presented 27 certificates to the managers at locations where they are employed. Special needs students recently partnered with Middle School students to go fishing at Foli Park. Parent organizations include PATT and BPAC.
Report No. 19-92 Innovation Center Update
Bryan Appel was pleased to announce that the high school Innovation Center project is progressing well and is ahead of schedule. The high school team has supported the project. Precautions will be taken so there is no disruption for students during final exams. Vice President asked where the furniture and equipment from the High School learning center will be relocated. Mr. Appel said much of it is being repurposed at the Middle School. Middle School equipment will be moved about the district where needed. Bryan Appel invited Board members to meet him at the high school at 1:00 PM before graduation to tour the Innovation Center.
Report No. 19-93 Final Exam Exemption Policy
High School Principal Jim Seput and Assistant Principal Julie Adelmann discussed the proposal for the final exam exemption policy. Board members seemed supportive of the change in policy, especially once they heard that high school staff was supportive.
The administrators said they hope that this policy, which rewards students who have good grades, attendance and for being punctual, will motivate students to succeed. Since the handbooks have already been approved, the administration would have to make a plan on how to communicate a revised policy with families and students. Board members directed the administration to bring a final proposal to the next Board meeting for action.
VIII BOARD COMMENTS/FOIA
Board Secretary Benoit reported on one FOIA:
• Smart Local 265 – New construction, HVAC, and other maintenance projects for summer 2019
The June 17th Board meeting will be held at Emily G. Johns School, due to construction at the Middle School.
President Campbell reminded Board members about graduation on Sunday. There was an issue with LifeTouch and not all of the pictures of senior graduates were printed in the Record. High School staff members are checking how to rectify this problem. The high school administration is looking into a new rendering of the high school to print on high school diplomas and graduation invitations.
Board members will hold a retreat on Saturday, June 15 at 8:00 AM at the Administration Office. President Campbell asked Board members to share topics of interest with Superintendent Baker.
