McHenry County Board Chairman Jack Franks wants late fees to be waived for property tax payments due to coronavirus.

McHenry County Board Chairman Jack Franks is preparing to call a special meeting among board members to propose that all late fees on the first installment of this year's property taxes be waived for 90 days due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

"The coronavirus pandemic is causing unprecedented damage to the national economy, the spreadsheets of our businesses, and the checkbooks of our residents," Franks said in a news release, as reported by The Daily Herald. "The statewide stay-at-home order, while necessary to halt the spread of this contagion, is resulting in lost wages and lost jobs. It is imperative that we aggressively seek whatever relief we can find for our taxpayers."

The hope is that the proposed ordinance will provide relief to local businesses and homeowners alike. Members are expected to convene remotely in hopes of approving the measure before tax bills are sent out.

While deadlines for filing federal and state income taxes have already been pushed back to July, Franks said he is hoping to buy even more time for stressed out taxpayers with his proposal.
