CITY OF PLANO: Information Sent By Midland Bank

Scam

City of Plano issued the following announcement on April 17.

With economic impact payment conversations increasing, watch out for schemes related to the coronavirus, or COVID-19. Fraudsters will find ways to take advantage of current news. Continue to protect yourself and your finances with the following:

Economic Impact Payment Scam-Prevention Tips:

The government will not call you asking for Social Security, credit card or bank account numbers.

Scammers may emphasize words "stimulus check" or "stimulus payment." The official term is "economic impact payment."

If you receive calls, emails or other communications claiming to be from the IRS or U.S. Treasury offering payment in exchange for personal information, do not respond.

Be wary of anyone telling you that you can get an instant payment or an expedited process for an economic impact payment.

Don't fall for scams that claim you need to pay money to receive your economic impact payment.

Scammers may mail bogus checks, potentially with an amount other than stated by the IRS, and direct you to call or provide information online in order to cash it.

Fraud involving payment of Federal taxes should be reported to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration.

Official IRS information about COVID-19 and economic impact payments can be found on the Coronavirus Tax Relief page on IRS.gov.
