An Illinois state representative called the death of George Floyd while in Minneapolis police custody "disturbing and sickening."

Rep. Keith Wheeler's (R-Oswego) comments came a couple of weeks after a bystander recorded the incident between Floyd and Minneapolis police officers, which ultimately led to his death and as a result nationwide protest over police brutality and social injustice — that is still happening in some states.

"The murder of George Floyd by a Minnesota police officer while he was already in custody is disturbing and sickening to me and demands full justice and accountability," Wheeler said in his press release. "Charging all of the officers on scene and upgrading the charges against Derek Chauvin were the first steps to justice."

Chauvin, who is now a former Minneapolis police officer, faces several charges including murder. The other officers involved face multiple charges.

"The outrage that followed Floyd’s murder sparked important dialog that includes protests covered on live television and social media as well as quiet conversations between neighbors, colleagues and family members," Wheeler said in his press release. "I reject the violence that followed some of the protests and emphasize that further violence only slows the progress toward reform. I am grateful for the outpouring of support for the Floyd family and for everyone in America who feels fear when it comes to dealing with law enforcement personnel."

Floyd's death sparked a nationwide movement for social justice and even calls for reforming how police departments operate. However, it also led to violence and at times became more political with conservatives and liberals blaming each other for looting and rioting.

Wheeler said he has been trying to improve his listening and conversations with neighbors, mayors, elected officials, friends and family who have come to him to speak about law enforcement in Illinois. He has also been working with friends in the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus to help make a change in the Black community.

"The coming weeks bring further opportunity to collaborate with advocates and legislators across the state. I have committed to participate in several discussion groups that will address issues from police accountability and reform to economic development in African-American communities throughout Illinois," Wheeler said in his press release. "At the heart of each discussion will be the point that is being made from coast-to-coast and around the world: every Black life matters. From my neighbors to my family members to complete strangers, my message to you is clear: you matter to me, I want to help, your voice is important, I am listening."
