Veteran Illinois state Sen. Jim Oberweis (R-Sugar Grove) has secured the endorsement of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) in his run in the 14th Congressional District.
“Jim Oberweis not only has served in the Illinois state Senate since 2013 but is chairman of his family-owned dairy operation and owner of his own business,” NFIB Illinois State Director Mark Grant said in formally throwing the nation’s leading small business advocacy organization behind the veteran lawmaker. “During his time in the state Senate, Oberweis earned 100% voting records, proving his strong support of small business issues. We are confident he will continue to be a champion for Illinois’ small business community in Congress.”
Oberweis, who is facing incumbent Rep. Lauren Underwood (D-Naperville), has made reviving the state’s small business industry and growing the economy central elements of his campaign.
“The NFIB Fed Pac has endorsed my campaign because they know that I am the best candidate to fight for real economic growth,” he told the DuPage Policy Journal. “My opponent supports jobs-killing measures like government health care for all and the Green New Deal. Businesses have been hit hard by the government-mandated shutdown of our economy. We can bring jobs back, but we need leaders in Congress who understand business issues and who will advocate for the common-sense policies we need. I am a job creator who will bring decades of business experience to Washington, D.C. to help bring our economy back.”
Serving in the 25th District since 2013, Oberweis earned the right to take on Underwood by emerging from a Republican primary field that included state Sen. Sue Rezin (R-Elmhurst) and former Kendall County Chairman James Marter.
Oberweis said part of his motivation for being in Springfield is to put an end to all the corruption.
"The culture of corruption in Illinois is a big reason why we lead the Midwest in outmigration," he said. "People are tired of a system of government that takes care of the politically connected insiders while ignoring the structural problems that are taking us on a road to insolvency.”
