Former Republican Congressional candidate James Marter views the so-called fair tax now being championed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker as the latest trick in Democrats’ never-ending game of deception.
“Nothing about this tax is what it’s being sold as,” Marter told the Kendall County Times. “They are pushing it as 'fair' when ultimately only those who work will pay as the rich leave in droves for friendlier confines and companies won’t come here because can’t they won’t be able to find workers who want to come here and all the pay big taxes.”
With veteran state Sen. Terry Link (D-Indian Creek) also becoming the fourth Democratic lawmaker who strongly backs the plan to now find themselves facing criminal charges, Marter argues there clearly are other reasons why taxpayers should reject the proposed tax like the plague. Facing tax evasion charges, Link joins former state Rep. Luis Arroyo, who faces up to 10 years in prison, and state Sen. Tom Cullerton, who has been hit with 41-count indictment on embezzlement charges. One-time state Sen. Martin Sandoval has already plead guilty to taking $250,000 in bribes from SafeSpeed, a red-light camera vendor.
“The issue of corruption has real consequences for many people,” Marter added. “With everything that’s already happening, some small business owners won’t still be in business if they have to eat this tax. We’re already leading the charge with all our taxes and now you’re going to throw even more on people.”
And then there is longtime House Speaker Mike Madigan, who finds himself implicated in an ongoing federal corruption probe involving ComEd in which its alleged bribes were steered to several of his close associates as part of a pay-to-play scheme aimed at currying favor with him.
“It never seems to end,” Marter added. “You’re already hearing if this thing passes how they want to tax retirement income and tank the economy even more.”
