EMA Director Ciciora explained that he went against his own protocol by activating the emergency sirens when the storm front hit earlier in the day. Normally, sirens are sounded when a tornado has been sighted. With winds exceeding 60 mph simultaneously with a weather alert for a tornado, EMA Director Ciciora said the conditions were deteriorating too quickly to do otherwise. Clerk Ii said sirens in the downtown area stopped mid-cycle at the same time the City lost power. It was explained that the sirens are electrically activated adding that the cost for battery backup is cost prohibitive.
