Veteran state Sen. Jim Oberweis (R-Sugar Grove) believes state Sen. Terry Link’s resignation as chairman of the Lake County Democratic Party should only be the start.

Recently hit with a federal count of tax evasion, Link announced his intentions in a recent email, adding his resignation is set to take effect on Sept. 15. After holding the chairman post for nearly three decades, Link further claims he has been thinking of stepping down “for quite a while” and “there is more to the story” than what’s been made public.

“I have called for Sen. Link to resign as both Lake County Democratic chairman as well as his Senate seat,” Oberweis told the Kendall County Times. “His resignation as Lake County chair does not come close to going far enough. Sen. Link has violated the public trust. While it is good he has resigned his volunteer political post; the truth is the public is much more concerned about his position as a state senator.”

Now running against U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood (D-Illinois) in the 14th Congressional District, Oberweis insists he is only concerned with what stands to help residents of the state.

“He needs to do the right thing and resign his senate seat immediately,” he added. “If he resigns before Sept. 11, there will be a special election for the seat.

Of course, the Democrats simply want to appoint a replacement, which is the likely outcome here. As usual, it is the voters who pay the ultimate price for political corruption.”

As the probe unfolded, the Chicago Tribune has reported Link wore a wire for the FBI as part of an investigation into former state Rep. Luis Arroyo, who is suspected of trying to lure a state senator into supporting video gaming legislation to the benefit of one of his lobbying clients.
