Veteran state Sen. Jim Oberweis (R-Sugar Grove) is hoping to ride the waves of President Donald Trump's endorsement all the way to Washington, D.C.
“President Trump’s endorsement and the subsequent online event he did for us has helped motivate and mobilize our supporters,” Oberweis told the Kendall County Times. “Having that kind of enthusiasm and excitement is especially important in the final push to Election Day. My supporters are motivated and are excited to go vote.”
Oberweis is hoping it’s all enough to make the difference in his 14th Congressional District run against Democrat incumbent Lauren Underwood.
“I think we are in a good spot heading into Election Day,” Oberweis added. “Despite being outspent by 4-to-1, this is a very close race. Whoever does the best job of getting their voters out will win this race, which is why I think we have an advantage.”
In Oberweis’ mind, Underwood has done little to directly engage with the people she claims to be connected with.
“My opponent has done little in terms of door-to-door contact with voters,” he said. “We have been running a very robust grassroots campaign from Day One. I believe that investment into grassroots campaigning will make a big difference in the outcome of this race.”
As for the Trump factor, Oberweis said the excitement generated by having secured his nod has come as a jolt of added adrenaline.
“We had a great response to the tele-rally with the president,” he said. “It was a great way to jumpstart the final push of the campaign.”
Oberweis has served in the 25th District of the state Senate since 2013.
