Speaker

Oswego Community Unit School District 308 issued the following announcement on Nov. 24.

Oswego Community Unit School District 308 Student Ambassadors, consisting of 8th grade - high school students from various culturally, linguistically, economically, as well as differently-abled groups recently participated in an equity workshop with the Superintendent. The workshop conversation addressed equity issues impacting students at school and in their community. Dr. John Sparlin, Superintendent of Schools, welcomed the student ambassadors to the workshop. “It is the hope of this partnership between the Student Ambassadors and the Superintendent’s office that students will have a platform for their voices to be heard and included,” said Dr. Sparlin.

At the workshop, students participated in activities to help uncover what a safe school learning environment is and to identify existing gaps. It was also discussed how students can express their ideas to teachers and administrators, and effectively communicate with other students. Common words shared throughout the workshop included: honest, reflective and impactful. “The ideas gathered from this workshop will be shared with the newly formed Equity Board Advisory Committee (EBAC),” said Faith Dahlquist, Associate Superintendent of Educational Services. LaTonya Simelton, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Coordinator indicated, “Incorporating the student voice were specific requests made by the EBAC at their first advisory meeting held in October.

This workshop affirmed the belief that the student voice is a critical tool in school improvement even during these challenging times of remote learning when in-person communication opportunities are limited and that these students are a valued partner.
