A bill sponsored by state Sen. Sue Rezin (R-Morris) will protect Illinois residents with preexisting conditions in the health insurance market.
Senate Bill 1365 introduces an amendment to the State Employees Group Insurance Act of 1971 that prohibits the state from applying for any federal waiver that would reduce or eliminate Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act protection or coverage.
The bill also protects coverage for the services classified as essential health benefits under the ACA.
On the Senate floor this week Rezin said there was an identical bill last year and multiple years prior passed in both the House and Senate.
"This bill simply protects people with preexisting conditions," Rezin said.
An exception to the amendment and a federal application may be made only if the general assembly – through joint resolution – approves such an exception.
The bill is now referred to the Rules Committee.
