Kankakee Community College recently issued the following announcement.
Christmas in the White House
Fri Dec 3rd 9:00am - 12:00pm
Christmas
KCC, Room D123, 100 College Drive, Kankakee, IL 60901, USA map
Americans have celebrated the holidays differently over the past two centuries - from the early days of the republic when it was a family affair to the twentieth century with holiday décor and the annual tree. The White House, the people's house, has reflected how Americans celebrated Christmas. This class will explore how the holidays were celebrated by our past presidents, how the holiday décor and frenzy has shifted over the generations, and how traditions were kept over the years. We will discuss the earliest Christmas tree accounts; we will learn why Teddy Roosevelt with his five children and menagerie of pets did not want a Christmas tree; and we will talk about how our First Ladies decorated the White House. Come and learn how the holidays and history come together.
Non-credit class. Meets Friday, Dec. 3 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. at KCC in Room D123. Facilitator is Christina Smith. Cost is $25.
