Illinois Rep. Mark Batinick (R-Plainfield) thanked police officers on National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.
“Thank you to our law enforcement officers for keeping our communities safe and your dedication this Law Enforcement Appreciation Day and always!” the legislator said on Facebook Jan. 9.
According to Newsweek, the holiday comes as the National Police Foundation (NPF) found that several cities with record-high crime in 2021 are also suffering from police staffing shortages, and Chicago made the list as one of those hit hardest by organized retail theft.
Amid violent anti-police riots and looting in 2020, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot promised to cut $80 million in funding from the police budget, according to Fox 17. But recently, Lightfoot urged U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland to send federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to help tackle Chicago’s illegal gun crisis in a city where there are “thousands” of dangerous, wanted individuals roaming the streets.
Kendall County has three police departments serving the county’s population of over 100,000 residents, according to CountyOffice.org, leaving Kendall ranked no 101 out of Illinois 102 counties in terms of the number of police departments per capita, according to the nonprofit group Crimegrade.org. Kendall County ranks safer than 99% of other counties in the U.S, the organization said.
