The Oswego 308 District Board of Education has decided to lift the mask mandate locally.

The move is a big one considering Oswego 308 is the state’s seventh largest school district.

The district is responsible for more than 18,000 students in 13 elementary schools, five junior high schools and two high schools.

The move to go mask optional came just after Oswego 308 District Board of Education President Dr. Donna Marino stepped down.

Marino’s announcement and the mask-optional policy come as parents across the state have requested mask-optional schooling after a downstate judge’s ruling.

In the school board’s last meeting, held on Feb. 11, half of the audience members were not wearing masks.

Marino adjourned that meeting with a vote.

The mask mandate was ruled unconstituional 10 days ago.

Sangamon County Judge Raylene Grischow declared Pritzker's blanket state of emergency school rules on masks and tests through the Illinois Department of Public Health "null and void." She said the governor and his agencies have been mandating rules upon students illegally.

“Statutory rights have attempted to be bypassed through the issuance of Executive Orders and Emergency Rules … This type of evil is exactly what the law was intended to constrain," she wrote.
