There's no escaping the price of gas. It continues making headlines across the nation and our state's gas tax, the second highest in the nation, is no help. Did you know your current state representative, David Welter, voted to double this tax? A Republican voting with Democrats for yet another tax increase, ugh!

Now the state is playing ridiculous games. They're requiring station owners to purchase signs saying the legislature suspended the gas tax increase ... not the tax ... just the increase. So, you'll soon find 4" x 8" signs at pumps declaring the generosity of Illinois. Talk about an oxymoron. Here's the actual truth...

- The gas tax automatically increases every 6 months. Gotta love automatic tax increases. Who's the generous one again?

- The freeze only applies to the 2 cent per gallon increase. 2 cents!

- Translation? This freeze is nothing but an election year ploy.

- After all, the numbers at 2 cents per gallon only saves 40 cents per fill. So, we're talking a measly $10 over 6 months. We're making station owners put up signs glorifying the generosity of Illinois over a measly $10? Are you kidding me?

Welcome to the insanity of Illinois. Enough is enough already. How about state representatives actually vote conservative, saying no to doubling the gas tax in the first place. Now there's a novel idea!

Jed Davis is a candidate for the 75th House District.
