The 41st Annual USHLI (United States Hispanic Leadership Institute) National Conference was held February 16-19 in Chicago, Illinois. Oswego East High School and Oswego High School had 45 students who were able to attend this conference through the support of teacher sponsors. This is the fifth time that students from both schools have been able to attend this inspiring conference where they were able to hear from local and national leaders.

The keynote speakers at this year’s conference included Melody Gonzales, who leads the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Hispanics with the U.S. Department of Education, and R. Mateo Magdaleno, Chief Executive Officer of IDQ Group, Inc., who challenged our students and others to remove labels and RISE because there are communities of people ready to help and lift them (Love’vantete). The conference also offers a college fair for students to meet representatives from various in-state and out-of-state schools. The participants who attend this national conference often continue on to become some of the most influential Hispanic leaders of their generation, helping govern cities, schools, states, and even the nation.

The mission of the USHLI is to fulfill the promises and principles of democracy by promoting education and leadership development, empowering Latinos and similarly disenfranchised groups through civic engagement and research, and by maximizing participation in the electoral process. Over the last 40 years, the USHLI has empowered minorities and similarly disenfranchised groups through leadership development, civic engagement, and research.
