State Representative Jed Davis, a Republican from Yorkville, has introduced the Protecting Kids Bill Package. This legislative initiative consists of 12 bills aimed at enhancing the safety and well-being of children in Illinois while also reinforcing parental rights.
“These bills are about doing what’s right for kids in Illinois,” said Rep. Davis. “We need to do more to support, protect, and care for the next generation, allowing them to thrive throughout life.”
The proposed legislation covers a range of issues. HB 1097 allows parents or guardians to record audio during meetings concerning their child's individualized education program (IEP). HB 1103 mandates age verification on online platforms distributing adult content. HB 1106 enables school districts to establish volunteer Special Education Advisory Committees upon parental request. HB 1107 focuses on training school staff to better support students with disabilities.
Further provisions include HB 1113, which permits schools to have certified chaplains volunteer to expand student support services, and HB 1140, which seeks harsher penalties for individuals charged with sex trafficking minors by preventing plea deals that result in lesser offenses.
Other bills like HB 1260 require human trafficking awareness training for various professionals such as cosmetologists and taxi drivers. HB 1346 proposes a grant program for funding School Resource Officers (SROs), while HB 2511 establishes a State Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Program aimed at reducing fetal alcohol disorders through education.
HB 2512 requires informed parental consent before minors can receive psychotropic medications. In addition, HB 2542 aims to update child support calculations for accuracy and fairness, particularly benefiting third-shift workers like firefighters and nurses. Lastly, HB 3008 introduces the Illinois Classroom Supply Assistance Program to reimburse teachers for personal expenses related to classroom supplies.
“Keeping kids safe and helping them thrive should be a priority for everyone,” said Rep. Davis. “I’m hopeful for strong bipartisan support on these common-sense bills putting kids first.”
