February was a slow month in the Illinois General Assembly, with many committees canceled or rescheduled and few bills progressing. Representative Jed Davis expressed hope for more action soon to deliver results for Illinois residents.
Governor Pritzker's annual State of the State and Budget Address unveiled the largest budget in Illinois history. Rep. Davis criticized it as an attempt to grab national media attention, saying, "The Governor claims Illinois has a balanced budget, but the reality is we’re staring at a massive deficit." He also condemned Pritzker's rhetoric comparing Republicans to Nazis as "reckless" and "divisive."
Rep. Davis introduced the Protecting Kids Bill Package, consisting of 12 bills aimed at improving child safety and parental rights. The package includes measures such as allowing parents to record IEP meetings (HB 1097), requiring age verification on adult content platforms (HB 1103), and creating grant programs for School Resource Officers (HB 1346).
In response to legislation targeting homeschooling, Rep. Davis launched a petition opposing what he sees as intrusive mandates against homeschooling families. As of February 27th, over 2,669 people had signed in support.
Davis also opposed a bill legalizing prostitution in Illinois, calling it reckless and potentially harmful by enabling human trafficking. He encouraged citizens to sign his petition against this legislation.
His office offers free museum passes for Chicagoland museums and encourages constituents to participate in his legislative survey to help shape priorities.
Upcoming events include traveling office hours on March 19th at Seneca Public Library. Deadlines for House Bill Committee Passage and House Bill 3rd Reading are March 21st and April 11th respectively.
