Last week, a bill introduced by State Representative Jed Davis successfully passed through the Higher Education Committee. Davis, a Republican from Yorkville, proposed the measure which mandates that elected community college board members take an oath to uphold the Constitutions of the United States and Illinois when they assume office. The committee approved the bill unanimously.

Davis emphasized the uniqueness of the situation, stating, "Currently, community college board members are the only elected office in Illinois not required to take an oath upholding the Constitution. This bill simply aligns community college trustees with all other elected officials in the state. It also represents the values of freedom and liberty we cherish as Americans."

House Bill 3011 will be presented next on the House floor for further consideration.

Additional information about the legislation and Representative Davis can be found on his official webpage and his 2025 Legislative Agenda page.
