In the closing days of the legislative session, Illinois Democrats passed a bill legalizing physician-assisted suicide. The bill was pushed through using a procedural tactic known as "gut-and-replace," which involved altering an unrelated proposal originally titled Sanitary Food Preparation. This maneuver allowed the controversial legislation to pass with limited public scrutiny.
State Representative Jed Davis (R-Yorkville) expressed his disapproval of the process and outcome in a statement. "Let’s be clear — Senate Bill 1950 wasn’t debated honestly. It started as a bill about food safety and ended with legalizing physician-assisted suicide in Illinois. If Democrats were proud of this bill, they would have run it under its real name and debated it in the open. They didn’t — and this process speaks volumes."
Davis highlighted concerns beyond the moral implications, emphasizing issues of trust and transparency within government proceedings. "It’s not just a moral issue, it’s a trust issue. People deserve a government that tells the truth, not one that manipulates the process. The same politicians who scream about ‘transparency’ just passed a life-or-death law by hiding it behind a food code title."
He further explained his opposition to the bill: "I voted no, not just because I believe in protecting life, but because I believe Illinoisans deserve honesty, respect, and a government they can trust. It’s the leadership I promise on a daily basis."
