State Representative Jed Davis has joined a legal effort challenging the budget process employed by Illinois Democrats. Davis, representing Yorkville, criticized the tactics used to pass the state's FY26 budget, which he described as unconstitutional.
"Enough is enough," stated Rep. Davis. "For too long, Illinois Democrats have disrespected the institution of the Illinois General Assembly through their tactics to silence opposition, prevent open debate, and adjust the rules to fit their own radical agenda. Utilizing these tactics to force through a bloated budget is not only wrong – it’s illegal."
The Illinois House of Representatives passed the FY26 budget on May 31st. The package consisted of three bills totaling over 5,000 pages and was presented with less than 18 hours for lawmakers to review before voting.
Illinois law mandates that each bill be read onto the record three times over three separate days. However, this requirement was bypassed as the FY26 budget was introduced as a 'gut-and-replace' amendment on a shell bill, meaning it was not read onto the record in full.
Rep. Davis further commented on the situation: "The never-ending rule suspensions, shell bills, limited debate, and other deceptive and manipulative tactics need to end NOW. It’s time for us to fight back against the dirty games Illinois Democrats have been playing for decades at your expense."
Davis concluded his remarks with a clear intent: "See you in court."
