Jed Davis, a state representative in Illinois, announced on Facebook that residents are facing higher electric bills due to recent legislative changes and energy market conditions.
"Illinois families are being crushed by soaring electric bills - and it's no accident," said Davis, State Representative from Illinois, according to Facebook. "What CEJA actually did. Why coal and gas are disappearing soon. Republicans and Democrats voted for this mess."
Rising electricity bills in Illinois have become a key political and policy concern as lawmakers navigate the effects of the 2021 Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA) and recent energy market volatility. According to MyJournalCourier, increased demand from data centers and delayed renewable projects have contributed to price spikes, prompting new legislation aimed at balancing affordability with reliability and decarbonization goals.
According to the Citizens Utility Board, since CEJA’s passage, residential electricity bills for Commonwealth Edison customers in northern Illinois rose by about $10.60 per month in summer 2025. Meanwhile, Ameren Illinois customers saw increases of 18–22%, or roughly $45 monthly, due to capacity auction price surges and related market changes.
As reported by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Illinois’s energy mix has shifted sharply over the past five years: coal generation fell from around 25% in 2019 to 15% in 2023, while natural gas rose to 16% and wind and solar grew to about 13% combined. This reflects a broader transition away from fossil fuels.
According to Ballotpedia, Davis is a Republican who has served as Illinois State Representative for the 75th District since 2023. He holds a civil engineering degree, previously worked as a village trustee, and has focused on energy affordability, small business, and local infrastructure during his legislative tenure.
