Illinois State Representative Jed Davis has provided an update on recent legislative activity in Springfield, highlighting developments from the annual veto session and community engagement efforts.
Davis described the first week of the veto session as largely unproductive, stating that “the majority party paraded a slew of non-binding resolutions condemning our federal government. It was an opportunity to score political points – not pass meaningful legislation.” He noted that substantive bills were passed during the second week but criticized many as poor public policy.
Among the measures Davis opposed were a $2.5 billion bailout for Chicago transit—funded in part by reallocating money from road improvement funds—increased restrictions on immigration enforcement, and additional state funding for energy technologies he said are unreliable and costly for families.
“Every time we go to Springfield, legislators reach deeper and deeper into your wallet, with no tangible results,” Davis said.
However, Davis pointed to one bill he supported: property tax relief for seniors. The legislation increases the maximum income limit for eligibility to $75,000 in 2026, expanding access to exemptions for those on fixed incomes. “I voted yes on this bill,” he said.
In addition to legislative updates, Davis reported leading a bipartisan town hall focused on prison conditions in Illinois. The event drew over 100 constituents and included participation from State Representative Barbara Hernandez. “Politics in Springfield are too often divided by partisanship. This event represents a move in the right direction—toward putting good policy ahead of politics. I look forward to turning these productive discussions into practical solutions,” Davis stated.
Looking ahead, Davis invited input from constituents as he prepares legislation for 2026. He encouraged residents to share ideas via email or phone or through his office’s New Bill Suggestion Form.
Davis also promoted a free museum pass program available through his office for Chicagoland museums and provided information about staying updated through his website and Facebook page.
Davis is a Republican who was elected to represent Illinois’ 75th House District in 2023, succeeding David Welter.
