Newark Fire Protection District responded to 40 calls in 2017 - 21.2 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Newark included 23 fires - 10 structure fires, six vehicle fires and seven other fires.

In all, the department saw $29,333 in fire loss - or about $1,275 per fire.

The department also received 17 false calls, including one malicious call and 16 other false calls.

The Newark Fire Protection District had an annual budget of $839,918 in 2017.
