Newark Community High School District 18 students suspended 54 times in a single school year

Newark Community High School District 18 reported 54 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 54 students during the year. That equates to 34.4 percent of the 157 students enrolled.

Of the 43 in-school suspensions, all of whom were high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 42 incidents. There were one incidents of violence without physical injury. For 41 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 11 out-of-school suspensions, all were given to boys, all of whom were high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 11 incidents. For seven incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
