Kendall County Board District 2 incumbent Tony Giles (R) lost his bid for an attempt at re-election in the recent primary, while fellow incumbent Elizabeth Flowers (D) moved on in an uncontested election.
There are three seats up for election this November in District 2.
The Republican primary had five candidates running for the three spots on the November ballot. Matthew Kellogg had the most Republican votes with 23.8%, followed by Dan Koukol with 23.01% and Joe West 19.68%.
Giles took only 18.2% of the vote, followed by Gabriella Shanahan with 15.39%.
All three Democratic candidates will face their Republican counterparts in November, including Flowers, Mary Murray and Karen Novy.
During the campaign, Kellog touted his connection to the farm community from growing up on his family’s 1846 Yorkville farmstead to attending Oswego High School as well.
“I am the seventh generation living on the farm,” he said. “I was one of about four farm kids in school, so I have a feel for both the urban and rural areas of Kendall County.”
Kellog said he is not concerned farming will go away, but that the voice of the farming community has been diminished.
Koukol will be seeking to return to the board, where he served from 2010 to 2016. He has continued to campaign for a seat on the board since losing re-election in 2016.
"We need somebody in there who will say 'no' to the wants and look for the best price possible on the needs," Koukol said.
West is a former trustee on the Oswego Village Board, and last year ran for Oswego village president. A former Marine, he has spoken about his support for fellow veterans.
"There are no veterans on the county board. I have a lot of knowledge to better represent veterans in the county," West said.
