Seneca Township High School Co-Curricular Committee Met Aug. 11.
Here are the minutes provided by the committee:
Meeting began at 5:30 PM.
A. No Public Comment.
B. NEAC Football - Mr. Haines and Mr. O'Boyle discussed the district's invitation to join the NEAC Football ONLY conference. Last year the Sangamon Conference was eliminated, and a new Vermillion Valley Conference was created. The VVC includes a lot of travel to district's far from SHS. Mr. Haines explained that travel times by bus this fall for football would be 2+ hours for 2 road games. One would require a 1:45 PM early dismissal from school. The key incentive to accept the invitation from the NEAC is the inclusion of St. Bede as a FULL Tri County Conference school and the potential for future local schools joining the Tri County Conference. Additionally, Mr. O'Boyle added that there could be a future Tri County Football Conference, which Dwight is pushing for. Once the district accepts the invite at the regularly scheduled August BOE meeting, St. Bede will officially join the Tri County. Joining the NEAC would include local rivalry matchups with St. Bede, Marquette, and Dwight. While traveling into the city for a football game isn't preferred, the drive is much better than the drives to the Danville area.
C. Preliminary Fall Sports Numbers - Mr. Haines shared that fall sports numbers have exceeded expectations in golf and volleyball. Football numbers initially looked higher than expected but with practices starting have returned to a more expected number. Overall, participation at SHS remains high in fall sports.
D. Re-Cap of Fall Sports Parent Meeting Night - Mr. Haines and Mr. O'Boyle made the decision, with admin support to cancel the meeting due to unexpected storms in the area. Items of importance will be shared electronically and in packet form, distributed by the head coaches to their respective teams. A reschedule date would be difficult in conjunction with all teams due to competitions beginning.
E. Review of COVID protocols in HS Sports in 21-22 - Mr. Stecken shared the Executive Order mandate for • indoor sports for players, spectators, and officials. While concerning, the district will comply. Mr. Haines and Mr. O'Boyle discussed the impacts outside.
F. Other - Mr. O'Boyle shared concern about the complicated nature of SHS' s eligibility policy. Mr. O'Boyle has proposed a more simplified version of eligibility that will be much easier for students and parents to understand, eliminating the waiver aspect. This will be further discussed at future policy and co-curricular committee meetings.
Committee adjourned at 6:11 PM.
