Kendall County Receives IDOT Grant for Construction of Public Transit Facility
Kendall County announced today that it has been awarded $4 Million for construction of a facility for Kendall Area Transit (KAT). The funding for this grant is provided through the Rebuild Illinois Downstate Transit Improvement Program.
According to Scott Gryder, Kendall County Board Chairman, this comes at the right time for KAT and Kendall County. “As KAT grows along with our community, a dedicated transit facility will help extend the life of transit vehicles and provide a home for KAT’s future growth”.
Since 2010, KAT has been housed in the Historic Kendall County Courthouse, with vehicles being stored across multiple County properties. A dedicated transit facility would place all KAT assets in one location.
Mike Neuenkirchen, VP of Operations for Voluntary Action Center of Northern Illinois, discussed the types of usage for a planned transit facility. “Our ideal home for KAT
would include space for dispatch and administrative use, meeting and break space for our employees, a mechanic’s bay, wash bay, and covered parking for our fleet”.
Planning discussions for the development of this project are in the beginning stages and will include discussions between County Administration, Voluntary Action Center, and the Kendall County Board. Final approval of this project will be made by the Kendall County Board.
Kendall Area Transit is operated as a partnership between Kendall County and Voluntary Action Center of Northern Illinois. Founded in 2010, KAT is a public transit service that provides demand-response transportation in Kendall County.
