City of Joliet Board of Fire and Police Commissioners met Aug. 12.

1. ROLL CALL

2. CITIZENS TO BE HEARD ON AGENDA ITEMS NOTE: There is a new temporary procedure for public speaking. Details can be found on the Joliet.gov “Public Comments” web page.

3. FOP Counsel Tamara Cummings, requesting that the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners Assert Jurisdiction and Schedule Hearings for three Police Officers
FOP Tamara Cummings and Kelly Coyle with Clark Baird Smith addressed the Board regarding the motion. Ms. Coyle stated the Chief is not opposed to scheduling the cases today but preserve the right to object to the Board's jurisdiction at the time of the hearing. A brief discussion was held regarding the procedure process for this matter. Motion to hear the arguments of the motion on the agenda. Motion carried unanimously. Attorney Cummings gave an overview of the motion to hear the disciplinary cases of Officers Sawyer, Clement, and Perri and provided reasons the Board has jurisdiction to hear the disciplinary cases. Attorney Coyle, representing the Chief, informed the Board of the argument that the appeals were not filed in the appropriate time frame as defined in the Fire and Police Board Rules.
Consensus was given to schedule the first hearing for Officer Sawyer for Wednesday, September 23rd at 5pm; the second hearing for Officer Clement will be scheduled for October 28, 2020 at 5pm; the third hearing for Officer Perri November 18 at 5pm.
Motion to Approve FOP Counsel Tamara Cummings, requesting that the Board of Fire and Police Assert Jurisdiction and Schedule Hearings for three Police Officers, was made by Commissioner Craig Purchase.
Motion seconded by Chairman Herb Lande.
Motion carried by the following vote:
AYES: Chairman Herb Lande, Commissioner Brad Price, Commissioner Craig Purchase, Commissioner Todd Wooten.
NAYS: None.
The hearing for Master Patrol Officer Sawyer is scheduled for Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. in Joliet City Council Chambers
The hearing for Master Patrol Officer Clement is scheduled for Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. in Joliet City Council Chambers
The hearing for Master Patrol Officer Perri is scheduled for Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. in Joliet City Council Chambers
