Oswego Community Unit School District 308 issued the following announcement on Sept. 8.
The popular doll line, American Girl, held a Heroes with Heart contest and asked children across the country to nominate an outstanding hero in their life who have risked their lives amid the pandemic in an effort to thank and honor those individuals. The company received more than 1K heartfelt and moving nominations for their consideration. Five heroes of the COVID-19 pandemic are getting the American girl treatment: Paramedic, Grocery Store Worker, Caregiver, Teacher, and Pilot
One of the nominations came from two students, Maggie and Betsy McBrayer, who nominated Pam Klick, First Grade Teacher at Churchill Elementary School. Maggie and Betsy indicated in their nomination entry how their teacher, Ms. Klick, during the pandemic visited each student’s house with a smile, an encouraging sign, and a bag of books.
For having been chosen as a Hero, Pam was gifted with a one-of-a-kind, custom-made American Girl doll made in her likeness, including outfit, and the nominators received a $200 American Girl gift card. Pam was impressed with the details that the company put into both the doll’s clothing and the accessories, noting that the doll’s lanyard has the school’s logo on it and even the miniature books are titled with actual names of books from her classroom.
The unique recognition was covered by several media outlets including WGN radio in Chicago, and an article on CNN.com.
