Children

Aux Sable Middle School issued the following announcement on Apr. 13.

Rocio Perez, an assistant director with the Arc of Illinois, will share information about advocating for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities at the fourth and final District 202 “Next Steps Transition Training” meeting for this school year, on Tuesday, April 20, 2021.

The training will be held virtually at 6:30 p.m. (See the Zoom login information below.)

Rocio, whose oldest child has a developmental disability, has worked at several large organizations focusing on the developmental and intellectual disability field including 12 years at Community Support Services in Brookfield, Illinois.

For the last two years she has worked at the Arc of Illinois. Currently she serves as the assistant director for outreach for the Illinois Life Span program.

According to its website, the Arc of Illinois advocates for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, families and community organizations to ensure that people with disabilities can live, work, learn, and play in communities across the state.

The Arc offers resources and information, supports families in their individual advocacy efforts and trains and educates people with disabilities, families, and professionals among other things. Below is a list of services we also offer.

The “Next Steps” training helps parents and caregivers plan, transition, and advocate for their children with disabilities.

This is the seventh year that District 202 is offering the Next Steps Transition training for community members interested in helping parents and caregivers plan, transition and advocate for their children with disabilities.

The Next Steps team comprises District 202 Vocational Education staff focused on improving delivery of services to families of students with disabilities; increasing family awareness of disability options and resources; and linking families in need to agencies that can support them with issues related to transition.

“Next Steps” team members include Kathy Thomason, vocational coordinator of the Work Training Program at Joliet Junior College; and Plainfield Academy vocational coordinator Colleen Goldenberg.

For more information, please contact Kathy Thomason at (815) 280-2814 or kthomaso@psd202.org; or the vocational coordinators at any District 202 high school.
