Aux Sable Middle School issued the following announcement on May. 4.

District 202 will present a weekly series of virtual seminars in May focusing on online safety for students.

The District 202 Plainfield Parent Community Network (PPCN) will present this special free program at 6:30 p.m. A “Virtual Provider Fair” will be presented for 30 minutes before and after the actual webinar, at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

The first webinar, slated for May 6th, is titled “Fostering Healthy/Positive Online Socialization.” It will explore how socialization has changed because of technology and social media; social skills that prompt healthy interpersonal interaction and cyber safety in the digital world.

Members of the Illinois Attorney General’s High Tech Crimes Bureau, Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force will speak at each webinar about various online safety issues, challenges, and resources for parents.

“Among so many other impacts, the pandemic has really cemented the role that social media plays and will continue to play in our lives,” said Tim Albores, District 202 Director for High School Student Services. Albores helped form the PPCN.

“We created this unique online series specifically because we know that children and adolescents have struggled with the many challenges social media presents from the beginning, most especially cyber bullying and safety,” he said.

Future webinars will focus on:

  • Building Online Resilience (May 13th)
  • Helping Children Navigate Online Aggression (May 20th)
  • Preventing Unwanted Online Solicitation (May 27th)
The PPCN will present this important program in both English and Spanish.

District 202 social workers, special education administrators and counselors formed the PPCN in fall 2016 to support parents with common parenting needs.

A committee comprising district administrators, principals, counselors and community members oversees the PPCN.

Professional development credits (CEUs and CPDUs) will be available for teachers and counselors attending this program.
