Bipartisan legislation led by state Sen. Meg Loughran Cappel (D-Plainfield) and Rep. Mark Batinick (R-Plainfield) that expands school zone speed limits time periods passed the Senate Transportation Committee May 11.
Under the proposed legislation, House Bill 343, the new school zone speed limit will begin at 6:30 a.m. instead of the previous 7 a.m. According to a release from Loughran Cappel about the proposal said, violation of the speed limits can result in fines or possible incarceration depending on the speed.
Cappel said people need to remain mindful that students are still present in the school zones before and after the time period on school zone speed limits have been posted.
"Because of their earlier start time, high school students in Plainfield are often around campus well before school zone speed limits take effect at 7 AM," Loughran Cappel posted to Facebook on May 11. "Because of this, it's important to be extra mindful when driving in school zones and expand safety guidelines to accommodate their schedules."
Loughran Cappel added that many students are taking advantage of extra-curricular programs and opportunities, which is why it is important to expand the period of time for school zone speeding limits.
House Bill 343 will move to the Senate for further consideration.
