YORKVILLE- State Representative Jed Davis (R-Yorkville) has introduced House Bill 4247, also known as the Online Age Verification for Material Harmful to Minors Act, which aims to protect children from accessing inappropriate content online. The bill has been assigned to the Judiciary – Civil Committee for further consideration.
In a statement, Rep. Davis emphasized the importance of safeguarding children from the negative impact of early exposure to pornographic materials. He stated, "We know accessing pornographic materials at young ages negatively impacts a child's mental health. So, why aren't we doing more to protect our children, especially given the unprecedented access to content through cell phones and tablets?"
Under the proposed legislation, websites that contain inappropriate materials for children under 18 would be required to verify a user's age before granting access. Rep. Davis argued that if websites refuse to implement age verification measures, the government has a responsibility to step in and protect children.
"I welcome discussions from legislators and stakeholders from both sides of the aisle, fully anticipating their support. In the end, protecting children should easily be a bipartisan issue," Rep. Davis added.
The Online Age Verification for Material Harmful to Minors Act is part of a larger package of bills introduced by Rep. Davis, known as Protecting Kids. These bills aim to address various issues related to the safety and well-being of children.
In conclusion, Rep. Davis's Online Age Verification Bill has been referred to the Judiciary – Civil Committee for further review. The bill seeks to ensure that websites containing inappropriate content for children implement age verification measures. Rep. Davis believes that protecting children from harmful materials should be a bipartisan effort.
