State Representative Jed Davis has criticized the city of Aurora for raising its flags to full staff before the official end of a statewide half-staff order. The directive, issued by Governor JB Pritzker, was meant to remain in effect through sunset on Sunday, September 14, 2025.
“The Governor’s half-staff directive was clear and carries the force of state law under the Illinois Flag Display Act,” Rep. Davis said. “Moving flags to full staff before sunset violated this order and undercut the purpose of this solemn tribute.”
The half-staff order aimed to honor victims of political violence. Davis argued that disregarding it showed disrespect for both the law and those being remembered.
“The Governor’s half-staff order isn’t a suggestion—it’s the law,” Rep. Davis continued. “By ordering Aurora’s flags raised in open defiance, the mayor has chosen ego over duty and politics over the solemn respect owed this weekend. It is an unacceptable breach of both law and public trust, and Aurora deserves better.”
Davis also thanked local firefighters who alerted him about the flag being raised early at their station. “These men and women showed courage and respect by ensuring their station’s flag remained at half-staff for part of the day. Their actions remind us what true public service looks like.”
Under state law, specifically the Illinois Flag Display Act (5 ILCS 465), all public bodies must follow orders from the governor regarding flag status.
Davis, a Republican elected in 2023 to represent Illinois' 75th House District, succeeded former representative David Welter.
