Oswego Community Unit School District 308 students suspended 2,020 times in a single school year

Oswego Community Unit School District 308 reported 2,020 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 2,020 students during the year. That equates to 11.2 percent of the 18,056 students enrolled.

Of the 1,617 in-school suspensions, 1,193 were given to boys and 424 were given to girls, including 522 elementary or middle schoolers and 1,095 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 1,264 incidents. There were 204 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 1,262 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 403 out-of-school suspensions, 301 were given to boys and 102 were given to girls, including 222 elementary or middle schoolers and 181 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 153 incidents. There were 107 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 165 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
