Oswego Community Unit School District 308 issued the following announcement on Oct. 23.
Lakewood Creek went on a kindness adventure today. Matt and his friend Ned from Ned’s Kindness Adventure came and shared some simple magic tricks as he spoke to grades 2-5 about being kind and the power of a smile.
He spoke of his recent trip to Kenya, discussing how sometimes people are fearful of things that are different for them. He shared video from his trip including the school he visited the surrounding area, and the culture. The children in the video sang a song in Swahili and he taught the kids what the words in the song meant.
Student volunteers shared things like what time they wake up in the morning, what time they get home from school, and how many kids are in their class and had them guess what things were like in Kenya.
He talked about how we take things for granted here, such as having clean water anytime we want it and he shared video showing the villagers getting water from a dirty ponds, rivers and wells. He talked about the kids in Kenya are grateful for what they have and if they want something, like a soccer ball for example, they make their won with plastic bags. He showed picture of Maasai warriors and let a student try on a Maasai shuka,
At the end of his presentation, he reminded the kids: Different can be good; Include others; Caring is cool; I can make friends anywhere; Each person matters A Lot!
Volunteers got up to share ideas of how they can apply these at school.
This free show was made possible due to sales of the hand-crafted items from Kenya. There will be a Kindness Sale Oct. 18-24th before school. The proceeds of the sale pay kindness forward by providing income to the artisans in Kenya and helping to provide the people in Kenya with clean drinking water. Additionally, the sales help to continue to send the Kindness Adventure assembly to other schools for free.
