Plano Area Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on Sept. 6.
The Plano Chamber of Commerce announces that applications are available September 1 for the next class of Plano Prime, a program of Leadership Plano.
The community awareness initiative gives participants, ages 55 and over, a pathway to become informed about the city of Plano, connect and engage with fellow citizens, and leverage their potential for service in non-profit and community organizations. Class 2 will meet in 2019, beginning with the first session on January 19 and concluding on March 26.
"We had an enthusiastic response from the participants in our inaugural class, which graduated in the spring of 2018," said Jamee Jolly, President/CEO of the Plano Chamber of Commerce. "We know we have a vast pool of mature people in Plano with the experience, skills, and the desire to give back to nonprofit or community groups; Plano Prime is helping them connect those skills in the community."
Applications are now being accepted for the program. Applicants must live in Plano (or within the borders of Plano ISD), and must express an interest in learning about the community and a willingness to serve Plano. Participants must also commit to participate in the entire program.
Those selected through the application process will attend six daylong sessions over the course of three months, learning about what makes Plano the City of Excellence, the inner workings of the city government, the school system, public safety (Plano Fire-Rescue, Plano Police, etc.), and the wide array of arts, recreation, and senior programs and services that Plano offers. Class members will have an opportunity to meet city leaders, tour key locations in the city, participate in team building exercises, and meet other committed Plano citizens. Throughout the program, participants will learn about opportunities to serve nonprofit and civic organizations.
"At Plano Prime, I learned about a host of services offered in our community that I hadn't been aware of before," said JoAnn T. Prindle, a graduate of the inaugural 2018 class. "As a result of the program, I'm more actively engaged in the community." Prindle is planning to use her new knowledge to help link co-workers at her company with volunteer projects in Plano.
The cost of the program is $500 for individuals and $900 for couples; financial assistance is available. The application is available online and deadline is October 31, 2018.
