AUX SABLE MIDDLE SCHOOL: Annual District 202 Middle School Battle of Books Goes Virtual

Books

Aux Sable Middle School issued the following announcement on Jan. 14.

The 2021 middle school Battle of the Books competition will go virtual this year due to the pandemic.

The annual event tests teams’ knowledge about specific books.

Student teams from all seven District 202 middle schools answer questions about a set list of books at their home school.

The winning team from each school advances to the district-wide competition typically held at the school of the previous year’s winner. This year students will compete using Zoom and Google Forms.

Battle of the Books is organized by each school’s media center specialist and assistant.

Contestants will also sport a different look: A Battle of the Books T-shirt designed by Ira Jones Middle School sixth-grader Charlotte McManaman.

“We also usually have each school represented by a different color, but this year we decided to all wear gray (the color chosen by our student artist) as a sign of solidarity,” said Aggie Valenti-Ferris, Media Specialist at Indian Trail Middle School.

Students have given up many school traditions and clubs during the pandemic, Ferris said.

“Our students are spending so much time in front of their screens right now,” she said. “Engaging students in reading and encouraging reading for pleasure is one of the most important things we can do to support student literacy and engagement.”
